On Saturday, September 1, 2007, Athletes for Charity in collaboration with Lutheran Social Services of New York – Foster Care Program hosted a “Back to School Party” and “Sports Day” for approximately 50 foster care youths from the New York City area.  The event was held at the state of the art Chelsea Piers – Field House and featured an afternoon of football, soccer, baseball – batting cages, and rock climbing.  Michael Jennings of the New York Giants, Adrian Jones of the New York Jets, Smush Parker of the Miami Heat, and former NFL player Jack Brewer volunteered their time to motivate the youths about their education and sports.

Each child received a book bag filled with composition or 3-ring notebooks, loose leaf paper, markers, crayons, sharpies, a pencil case, folders and much more.

Product sponsors for the event included Glaceau (Vitamin Water and Smart Water), Sharpies, Staples, Ecko Kids, Rocawear, New York Giants, New York Jets, New York Rangers, New York Liberty, New York Knicks, WNBA Cares, and the Women’s Sports Foundation.

The event was also made possible through generous financial contributions from various individuals including Ovie Mughelli of the Atlanta Falcons though he was not able to attend.
